Class of 2024 ASB Candidates

Class of 2024 Treasurer

Barker, Jaylea

Do you have any previous leadership experience? If so, please explain. If not, please explain why.
I have had previous leadership experience, during the time I was accepted into the National Youth Leadership Forum. I was part of a project called the “Mission to Mars”.  We built a robot, and I was the lead for building the actual robot and co-lead of the coding team. Both my jobs included overseeing the project, managing our time, progress, and overall operability. I was also fortunate enough to be invited to the presidential inauguration Alumni program, but sadly was not able to go. The program is a leadership program for young adults.

What function does Kealakehe ASB serve on our campus?
The function of the Kealakehe ASB is to help plan events, as well as helping the students. Making sure their ideas are shared and being recognized. They are the coordinator between both the students and the administration. They are the middle point for both the staff and students.

Why do you want to be in ASB? What skills, talents, or qualifications do you have that would contribute to ASB?
I want to be in ASB because I want to try something new and start fresh. I also want to be a part of something that is important, and be able to share my ideas. I am a very social person, which makes me easy to get along with as well as being very approachable. I also have a very open mind when it comes to new ideas, along with thinking outside of the box. I also believe that I am a very motivational person who sees the positive side of things. I'm interested in being the treasurer because I am good at math, it is one of my strong suits and I have had experience working the register at the farmers market. I believe that these skills and experience will help me become a good treasure.

What activities do you participate in, how much homework do you have, etc.?

I am not currently participating in any activities at the moment due to covid-19 but I occasionally work at the farmers market and dance hula and do jiu jitsu on the weekend, but I hope to join a few of the sports teams or clubs when school starts up again. I’m not sure how much homework I will have yet until I start back up at school again but I have very good time management, I am very good at keeping my grades up along with keeping up with all of my classwork.

Share a challenge that you have faced (big or small). How did you handle the challenge? How did you grow from it?
The challenge I faced was moving away from the place I lived most of my life, and where almost all my family lived along with my dad and grandparents who helped raise me. When I first moved here I was upset and sad because i would no longer be able to see my grandma as much as i used to, as she was the person I was always with, but I soon came to like it here and accepted the fact that this was my new home. It was easy for me to adapt and make new friends and come to love it here. It showed me that in life you go through a lot of change but you just have to adapt and overcome those obstacles to achieve your goals.

Why do you want to be in ASB? What skills, talents, or qualifications do you have that would contribute to ASB?
I believe that I can bring a lot to the table for ASB. Ever since I was little I have loved working with numbers. I am a very open person and love to make new friends. I also love communicating with fellow peers and hearing their own opinions.

What activities do you participate in, how much homework do you have, etc.?
On an average week, I have a pretty full schedule. From extracurricular activities such as Musical Theatre, Chinese Lion Dance, Cross Country, Track, Debate, and more! Sometimes I am known as a huge procrastinator. But every single time I get the work done and always do it to the best of my ability.

Share a challenge that you have faced (big or small). How did you handle the challenge? How did you grow from it?
There was one time when I needed to fill in for a musical. One of the actors in the show had an accident and wasn’t able to perform. So in a matter of two days, I was ready to fill in for the part and in the end, the actor that got hurt still got to do one show.

Why do you want to be in ASB? What skills, talents, or qualifications do you have that would contribute to ASB?
I want to be in ASB because I want to help as much as I can to my school, being in ASB could also help me in the future. I enjoy working in a team, I can also be a leader if I have too. I have good time management and confidence to talk in big crowds. I am very organized and will be very helpful for planning events at our school.

What activities do you participate in, how much homework do you have, etc.?
A regular week for me is going to ballet for four days a week after school and Saturday mornings. Most of my homework is from math, so I try my best to finish it during lunch and I’ll do the rest at night.

Share a challenge that you have faced (big or small). How did you handle the challenge? How did you grow from it?
A challenge that I had to face was when my grandma had an accident that happened a couple of days before this pandemic. She fell down and her brain started bleeding so her memory wasn’t that good. She needs to be taken care of for 24 hours for 6 months. So me and my sister would have to watch her almost everyday with my cousins and aunties. My family has been in countless fights and I’ve been annoyed by it a lot. My aunties, uncles and parents have to sacrifice even more everyday because of this. I grew from this challenge by realizing that I should be more helpful and not annoyed that I always have to watch her.
